I first met your wife in 4th grade I think (an old man with an old memory should not be trusted to be accurate) when she transferred from 49 School to St. Anne School in Rochester, N.Y.  Julie was so nice and so dazzlingly smart that I, like most of the boys in our class, developed a crush on her.  She was lovely and kind to everyone.  She helped me with school work.  She was obviously the smartest student in the class but never with any affectation. Even then, it was apparent that she was a quality human being with great potential.  I knew her brother Joe but not as well.  He was older but was always so nice.  They were delightful people.  I moved to the west coast in 1974 and to Portland in 1981.  I would run into Julie from time to time when she was in charge of Portland Arts & Lectures and then with Mercy Corps.  We thought it interesting that three members from the same class at St. Anne’s (also Mary Ann Phillips) in Rochester would move to Portland.
