I didn’t know Julie well, but my wife used to work for her and revered her. I once went to ask Julie for career advice. She told me “there’s really only 100 people in Portland and they’re always changing jobs.” It made no sense to me!

Fast forward 20 years and it makes sense. What she was really saying was “join the community.” Being young and feckless, I didn’t understand what that really meant. But she did, because she was always busy building communities. People like her are the glue keeping this whole ramshackle civilization from falling apart. I’m really sadden by her departure.
