Okay, so this isn’t exactly following directions, but it’s one of my favorite stories involving Julie. We all know she wore a uniform of a white tank top and navy blue (“IT’S FUCKING NAVY BLUE, NOT BLACK GOD DAMN IT”) slacks and jacket, because then she never had to think about “what to wear.” In about 2001, Lara Utman (Literary Arts employee) was house-sitting on Thurman, and she had permission to have the rest of us LA-ers over for an evening. I hatched an evil plan that Lara helped me execute. While the rest of the staff was drinking Pinot Gris on the patio, Lara escorted me up to Julie’s dressing chambers, where I saw hanging in the closet a perfect row of navy blue jackets and neatly folded navy blue slacks. We carefully opened her dresser drawers until we found the right one, holding a stack of clean, white tank tops. I pulled up a couple and, in the middle of the pile, slipped in a bright turquoise one.
